ĀBELĪTES / ORGANIC, NATURE-FRIENDLY FARMING
Ābelītes is our family farm, where daily life follows the rhythm of nature. We raise our animals with love and care, look after natural meadows and enjoy every season. Every animal and corner of nature has a story here, and we are happy to share those stories with our visitors.
01 / OUR STORY · SINCE 2007

Our story began in 2007. Drawing inspiration from farmers in Scotland and England too, we gradually built a family farm where raising animals goes hand in hand with caring for natural meadows.
02 / OUR APPROACH
Our work begins in the meadow. We rotate grazing areas, plan winter feeding and care for the soil’s nutrient cycle. In our daily approach, animals and grasslands are parts of the same story.

Pasture forage is the foundation of our farming.
By rotating grazing areas, we give the grasslands time to rest.
Feeding and work continue in winter too.

Alongside our herds, daily life includes poultry, gardens and the cycling of the farm’s organic resources. Much of what we grow is for our family — part of our way of life and this place’s character.

THE OWNERS’ FULL STORY
About us: An organic, nature-friendly farm Our story Our farming story began in 2007 with the Ābelītes property — 20 hectares of overgrown but truly clean land that had never been exposed to synthetic chemicals. Inspired by experience in the upland regions of Scotland and England, we established an organic livestock farm adapted to our local climate and natural conditions.
Today we operate as a strong family business and manage more than 200 hectares of agricultural land, mainly natural meadows. We care for more than 100 cattle, 80 sheep, a small herd of goats and a varied collection of poultry.
Our philosophy and the grass farmer approach We call ourselves grass farmers. Our goal is not maximum output at any cost, but the highest product quality, the preservation of biodiversity and the restoration of living soil.
Our meat has been awarded the “Dabisko pļavu produkts” label, recognising that the animals eat botanically rich forage and help preserve Latvia’s natural treasures.
The foundations of our farming:
100% grass-fed meat: The animals live outdoors all year and eat only natural meadow grass and hay, without grain concentrates or GMO additives.
Regenerative methods: We use rotational grazing, winter bale grazing and manure composting, maintaining natural nutrient cycles and feeding the soil microbiome.
A diverse ecosystem: Alongside cattle and sheep farming, we develop poultry keeping and horticulture for our own consumption, while also providing educational rural tourism and an oasis of peace for our customers and like-minded people.
Directly from the farm to your table As a family farm, we take responsibility for every stage of the process ourselves. We offer our customers 100% traceable, fresh organic products directly from the producer — for people who appreciate real flavour and care about their own and their family’s health.
----- ADDITIONAL DISTINCT TOPIC: POULTRY AND GARDENS -----
Poultry, gardens and ornamental planting: Regenerative farming for our own consumption Alongside our main livestock activities, we maintain and develop a diverse horticultural and poultry ecosystem. Its main purpose is to provide our family with clean, healthy and nutrient-rich food while putting natural, regenerative resource cycles into practice. Poultry — garden helpers and recyclers of organic matter A varied poultry family lives in our yard and garden: geese, ducks, chickens and turkeys. The birds have a practical, integrated role on the farm: Natural pest control: The birds move freely around the garden and park, helping control insects and other pests. Recycling food scraps: They efficiently process organic kitchen and garden leftovers, preventing resources from going to waste. Fertiliser for compost: Poultry manure provides a valuable source of nitrogen for manure composting and returns to the garden to improve the soil. Fruit and vegetable gardens: Health from our own land In our family’s fruit and vegetable gardens, we work without synthetic pesticides or mineral fertilisers, using natural growing methods: Maintaining living soil: We enrich the beds with our own manure compost, which feeds the soil microbiome and supports natural nutrient cycles. Ground cover and mulching: We use mulching and crop rotation to retain soil moisture, protect against leaching and prevent weeds from spreading. Clean harvests for our own consumption: We produce nutrient-rich vegetables, berries and fruit that are completely free from chemicals. Ornamental planting and biodiversity Around the farm, we purposefully create ornamental planting, tree and shrub plantings and landscaped areas. These have more than an aesthetic function. They also: Create a microclimate and protect the grounds from wind; Provide shelter and food for beneficial insects, pollinators and birds; Blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape, strengthening the farm’s overall biodiversity.
----- ADDITIONAL DISTINCT TOPIC: GOATS -----
Goats: Natural landscape architects and outstanding potential We also keep a small herd of goats with a unique, irreplaceable place in our natural ecosystem. At present, the goats mainly act as our natural landscape architects, helping restore and maintain open meadow and boundary areas.
Controlling scrub and overgrowth: Goats eagerly feed on shrubs, tree shoots and other rough plants that cattle and sheep are less willing to eat. They efficiently clear overgrown areas and prevent meadows from turning into scrub without mechanical intervention.
The potential of the Anglo-Nubian breed: Our chosen Anglo-Nubian breed stands out for its calm temperament and excellent dairy genetics. Although we do not currently process milk or make cheese, this remains valuable potential for the farm’s future. Anglo-Nubian goat milk has a mild, sweet flavour and high nutritional value, making it ideally suited to high-quality cheesemaking.
The goats on our farm show that every animal species has an important role in the shared cycle of natural resources and landscape management.
